Python has been in the top 10 most popular programming languages of the TIOBE Programming Community Index since 2003. As of September 2015, this position is secured. It is mandatory for 2007 and 2010 programming languages. This is the third most popular language whose grammatical syntax is not primarily based on C, as is the case with C++ and Objective-C. In terms of convergence, C# and Java share some syntactic similarities with C, such as the use of curly braces, and are similar in some respects.

Practice shows that scripting languages like Python are very productive compared to convention languages like C and Java. The size of the package used is often small compared to Java and no larger than in C and C++.

Some of the organisations that use Python are Google, Yahoo!, CERN, NASA and other small organisations like ILM and ITA.

Python can also be used as a scripting language for web applications, for example through mod_wsgi for Apache. For the web gateway interface, the standard API is chosen to serve your applications. Software frameworks for web applications such as Django, Pylons, Pyramid, TurboGears, web2py, Tornado, Flask, Bottle and Zope help developers design and maintain complex applications. Pyjamas and IronPython can be used when designing Ajax-based applications. SQLAlchemy can be used for mapping data from similar databases. Twisted is a software framework for communication between computers and is used by Dropbox.

Libraries such as NumPy, SciPy and Matplotlib provide efficient use of Python for scientific calculations. Sage is a mathematical software program written primarily in Python that covers many aspects of mathematics, including algebra, combinatorics, number theory and more.

Python has been successfully implemented as a scripting language in a number of software packages, including such powerful tools as Abaqus, FreeCad, 3D animation software and tools such as 3ds Max, Blender, Cinema 4D, Lightwave and 2D image editing software such as GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus and Paint Shop Pro. GNU Debugger (GDB) uses Python to visualise complex structures such as C++ containers for elements. ESRI defines Python as the best choice of scripting language for ArcGIS. It is also used in video games and is the only one of the three possible languages adopted by the Google App Engine, the other two being Java and Go.

As a scripting language with a modular structure, simple syntax and a rich set of text processing tools, Python is used in artificial intelligence and computer-aided engineering (OEI) projects.

Python is also widely used in the field of information strategy.

The main part of the Sugar for One Laptop per Child XO software being developed at Sugar Labs is written in Python. It is also the main programming language in the Raspberry Pi project, which develops single-board computers. LibreOffice includes Python and includes Java as a replacement for it.

Python Scripting Provider has taken a niche position after the release of version 4.0 on 7 February 2013.
